Sheldon E. Burnham

Sheldon E. Burnham, 74, of East Boothbay, died Tuesday, January 20 with his wife, daughter and brother, Douglas, at his side.

Sheldon was born August 5, 1934 in Linekin to Lester and Louise (Rice) Burnham.

He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1953 and married the love of his life, Freda Nichols on October 29, 1960.

Sheldon was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Korea and the Naval and Air Force Reserves.

He was a member of the Bayview Masonic Lodge #196 of East Boothbay and the East Boothbay Methodist Church.

Sheldon moved back to Maine from Connecticut in 1972, leaving the "rat race," as he called it, to be near his other love, the ocean. He lobstered on the FV Daughter Ann, which he built, until 2007.

In his free time, Sheldon loved racing, camping, dancing and enjoying the company of his family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Freda; his daughter, Ann McBride and her husband, Jim, and his treasured grandsons, Matthew and Zachary, all of Ellington, Conn.; his brothers, Parker and his wife, Phyllis, and Stanley and his wife, Toni, all of Dallas, N.C., Douglas and his wife, Doris, of Sawyer’s Island, and Cecil of South Bristol; his sisters, Beverly Burnham and Maude Winchenbach and her husband, Gerald, all of Rockland. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be sadly missed by all.

A private service for family was held Saturday, Jan. 24 at the East Boothbay Methodist Church. A celebration of Sheldon’s life will be held this spring; a notice of the date will be published.

Roger E. Pinkham

Roger Eugene Pinkham, 71, of Boothbay Harbor, died Jan. 14 at Maine Medical Center with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Boothbay Harbor, January 14, 1938, the son of Gerald Pinkham Sr. and Hazel Clifford Pinkham. He attended local schools and worked locally digging clams, worming and seining fish. He also did electrical work with his father-in-law, Ron Calhoun. He also enjoyed going on rides to northern Maine.

Roger loved the outdoors and nature. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He had a lot of good friends and will be greatly missed.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Gerald Jr., Raymond and Allen Pinkham; a sister, Beverly Thibodeau; a sister-in-law, Sue Pinkham; and his father-in-law, Ronald Calhoun.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Karen Calhoun Pinkham of Boothbay Harbor; a daughter, Lindsey Pinkham and her companion Michael Percy of Warren; brothers, Larry Pinkham of Boothbay, Darryl Pinkham and his wife Beth of Edgecomb, and Gary Pinkham and his wife Connie of Boothbay Harbor; sisters, Shirley Young of Gloucester, Mass., Geraldine Blake and her husband Harvey of Boothbay Harbor, Sandra Barter and her husband Neil of Boothbay Harbor, Dilys Tedford of Boothbay Harbor, Janet Peters of Boothbay, and Roberta Chubbuck and her husband Dan of Edgecomb; mother-in-law Grace Calhoun of Boothbay; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Tonon of Boothbay, and Judy Dorr and her husband Charles, both of Boothbay.

A celebration of Roger’s life was held Saturday, January 17 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roger’s memory to the Ron Calhoun Rotary Scholarship Fund, Boothbay Harbor Rotary, P.O. Box 518, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Nancy L. Campbell

Nancy L. Andrews Campbell, 74, died Monday, January 19 at St. Andrews Hospital after failing health.

She was born January 5, 1935, the daughter of Angus & Mildred Pierce Andrews. She graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in the class of 1953. She married Irving Campbell the same year.

She worked for many local businesses, Etonic shoe in Richmond and, in later years, was a caregiver in many private homes.

She loved feeding and watching the birds, especially her cardinals. She enjoyed cooking and was well known for her spaghetti sauce. The most important thing in her life was her family. They will miss her loving, caring and spirited native.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Walter and Newbert "Dint" Andrews; and sisters, Donna Farmer and Marlene Grant.

She is survived by her daughters,

Vicki Arsenault and her husband Barry of Woolwich, and Debra Spear and her husband Bill of Boothbay; a son, Thomas Campbell and his wife Belinda of Boothbay Harbor; her former husband, Irving Campbell; grandchildren, Jason and Tyler Arsenault, Melanie Joselyn, Desmond Kelley and Aleigha Campbell; five great-grandchildren, Kyle, Samantha, Channel, Riley and Keegan; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Roland Haskell Sr. and Roland Haskell Jr.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Ocean View Cemetery in the spring.

Freeman Peaslee

Freeman B. Peaslee, 71, of Boothbay died January 24, 2009 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick after a brief illness.

He was born January 20, 1938 in Somerville, the son of Guy F. and Leola E. Benner Peaslee.

He married Mary Barter Peaslee twenty years ago in Boothbay.

He lived for hunting, fishing and traveling, especially with his best friends Pat & Ron Benoit from Spencer, Mass. Freeman was a man of few words, but of honesty and trust and he loved his family.

Freeman started his successful F.B.P. Construction business in 1966. He enjoyed operating the business from his home located at Back Narrows Road in Boothbay.

In his spare time he enjoyed being at home with his wife, feeding and watching the birds in their front yard.

He was predeceased by a son, Stephen Barter; a daughter, Suzie Haskell; brothers Aubrey, Harold and Forest Peaslee; and a sister, Francis Conley.

Survivors include his wife and best friend of 50 years, Mary Peaslee of Boothbay; a son, Freeman Peaslee, Jr. of Lincoln; brothers, Robert Peaslee of Readfield, Douglas Peaslee of Jefferson, Fred Peaslee of Wiscasset, Guy Peaslee of Boothbay, and Lawrence of Edgecomb; sisters, Evelyn Colby of Augusta, Myra Cook of Tallahassee, Fla. and Marion Wright of Wiscasset; five grandsons and one granddaughter

Freeman requested that there be no service and the family is respecting his wish.

Merle R. Matthews Jr.

Merle R. "Butch" Matthews Jr., 55, of Wiscasset died Saturday, January 24, at his residence.

He was born in Boothbay Harbor on July 22, 1953, the son of 
Merle R. and Bertha "Bunny" (Arsenault) Matthews.

Butch attended Boothbay schools and graduated from Boothbay 
Region High School. He was employed by Maine Yankee and the Mason Station for several years. He enjoyed many hours of digging on the flats. He was also a very skilled welder and enjoyed collecting antiques.

He was predeceased by his parents.

He is survived by two daughters, Melissa Matthews and Heather Matthews of Wiscasset; one sister, Donna Matthews of Bath; and many relatives, including aunts, uncles and cousins in the Boothbay area. He is also survived by many friends, especially the Seigars family of Wiscasset who were very special to him.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 at the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset with the Rev. John Potter officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in care of his daughters to the Merle R. Matthews Jr. College Fund, 32 Hale Pond Road, Wiscasset, ME 04578.
