Robert Schmidtmann
Longtime Boothbay Harbor resident Robert Schmidtmann died Monday, August 3 after a long illness.
Born November 9, 1920 in Denison, Iowa to Carl and Anna Kahl Schmidtmann, he was a civil engineer, Realtor, and entrepreneur.
Smitty was nothing if not a free spirit. He bummed around Mexico in the 1930s, eventually contracting a severe liver ailment that hospitalized him for over a year. The doctors did not think he would make it to his 21st birthday, but he outlived them all. A graduate of Iowa State University, he moved to Fairbanks in the territorial days, earning his master’s degree from the University of Alaska, where he was president of his class.
While in Alaska he met the love of his life, Miriam Carlson, who by all accounts was none too impressed. She stood him up on what would have been their first date. Typically of Smitty, he did not give up easily, and after several years and thousands of miles of pursuit, they married in Okinawa where he was in charge of rebuilding the islands after World War II. There they had two sons, Michael and Karl.
Tiring of the tropical heat and humidity, they moved to Boothbay Harbor sight-unseen in 1955 because they liked a picture they had seen in a magazine. There they had another son, Brandt. They lived out their days in the region, a loving couple until Mim’s death in September 2008.
Well read and knowledgeable in wide-ranging and seemingly unrelated areas, Smitty was a talented writer. Working for Mim in her real estate office on Oak Street, he was known for penning their clever newspaper and magazine advertisements. Always a maverick, he rode a one-speed bicycle 500 miles in his 20s, participated in sports car races in his 30s, learned to fly in his 50s, and took up sailing in his 60s. He solved crossword puzzles in pen into his late 80s.
Smitty is survived by his sons Michael, Karl, and Brandt Schmidt-mann; his adopted daughter Judi Plimpton; and his grandchildren Nicole, Max, Katrina, Katie, Lindsey, and Madison Schmidtmann.
Memorial services will be held at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor at 11a.m. Monday, August 17, with a reception to follow.
