Katherine A. Duncan

Katherine "Kathy" A Duncan, 50, of Boothbay Harbor, died unexpectedly, August 8, 2009 at her residence.

She was born in Boothbay Harbor on Jan. 19, 1959, the daughter of Donald and Marjorie Latter Alley.

Kathy grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools. She was a housekeeper for St. Andrews Hospital for many years.

Some of her favorite things were listening to country music, riding in Brent’s boat, her cat, and she dearly loved her nephews and niece more than anything.

Kathy is predeceased by her parents, and her husband William Duncan. Survivors include her sister, Donna Giles and her husband Brent of Boothbay Harbor, three nephews including Brandon Giles of Boothbay Harbor, and Adam Giles and Michael Giles, both of Wiscasset. Also one niece, Jennifer Connor and her husband Fred of Falmouth.

Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.

 

David Child Norcott

David Child Norcott, 54, died Wednesday July 29 at his home on Southport. He was born January 9, 1955 in Malden, Massachusetts, a son of John and Lois Child Norcott. He grew up in Malden until the age of twelve when he and his family moved to Southport.

He attended Southport Elementary School, Boothbay Region High School and graduated from college with a degree in Accounting. He worked as an Accountant for the I.R.S. and several major corporations until he retired.

He enjoyed fishing, boating, crossword puzzles and sailing.

He is survived by a son, Jarrod Norcott of Southport, a Step-son, Justin Peterson of Tampa, Florida, a cousin, Larry Johnson of Barters Island, and several other cousins.

At his request there will be no services. Contributions in David’s memory may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301, Attn: Gift Processing.

Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay.


Mary Virginia Kelly Skipper

Mary Virginia Kelly Skipper, aged 102 and a half, currently of Lake Charles, Louisiana, died on July 27, 2009. "Peggie," "Toter," "Mother," "Grandmother," the much nicknamed Mrs. Skipper, was born in Longview, Texas on December 27, 1906. Except for her time in Dallas at Southern Methodist University, she lived in Longview until she was 88 years old, after which she moved to Lake Charles to be in closer proximity to family. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, first in Longview and then in Lake Charles.

Mary Virginia was born to LeGrande D. and Cacy McCullough Kelly. Her grandfather, G. A. Kelly, founded the Kelly Plow Company which was an important industry in Longview’s history. During her time in Longview, among many other busy pursuits, Mary Virginia was involved in the Shakespeare Club, the Greenbriar Garden Club and the Greenshire Women’s Club. The majority of her volunteer time, however, was devoted to the First United Methodist Church of Longview where she was active in many different roles which ranged from teaching Sunday School to being a Trustee. She served the United Methodist Women on the local, district and national levels in a variety of ways including President, Vice President, Secretary of Missionary Education, and District President. She was honored when their cookbook was dedicated to her, not only for the above service, but for the yearly baking of hundreds of loaves of Orange and Apricot Bread for the Garden Sale Fiesta. She continued her association with the U.M.W. at the First United Methodist Church of Lake Charles, and she was a member of the Col. Ware Sunday School class.

Peggie was always a gracious hostess and was well known for her parties held both at home and at the church. For many years, she hosted an annual Halloween party for all the neighborhood children and their friends. In Lake Charles, she loved to host the Christmas parties for church groups and for the Kappa Delta sorority, so she could share her extensive collection of Santas. She entertained every summer for over twenty years at her cottage in Boothbay Harbor, where she lived down the street from her younger brother, Verner "Tex" Kelley, and his wife Margaret Orne Kelley and their children and grandchildren.While in Maine, Peggie atteneded the Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church. Some of her Longview friends and family got to share in her enthusiasm for the cooler summers of Maine.

Mary Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Dozier T. Skipper, Jr., and her two brothers, LeGrande Kelly and Verner E. Kelly. She is survived by her daughter Caroline Skipper Hollins of Lake Charles and her son LeGrande Kelly Skipper and his wife Dawn of Lufkin, Texas, her two grandchildren Kelly McCullough Hollins and his wife Gwyn of Decatur, Georgia and Virginia Hollins Webb and her husband Patrick of Lake Charles. She is survived by two great-grandsons, Arthur Alexander Hollins and Harper McCullough Hollins. Peggie had many dear friends including Judy Mayo of Lake Charles. Chris Hagstrom with his wife Susan and their four children, Josh, Jenny, Jake and Jaclyn, survive Peggie as her "adopted" family in Longview. 

Her funeral service was held at First United Methodist Church in Longview at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 1. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery followed the service.

Donations in honor of Peggie may be made to the First United Methodist Churches of Longview, Texas and of Lake Charles, Louisiana.

 

Carol Greenleaf Rose

    Carol Greenleaf Rose, 74, of Newcastle died  August 9, 2009 at her  Sheepscot Road home with her family by her side.

    She was born October 3, 1934 in Boothbay, a daughter of the late Emery N. And Elaine E. (Jaeger) Greenleaf. 

    Mrs. Rose was a life member of Crescent Chapter #54 Order of the Eastern Star, former president and trustee of WCC, former town clerk and selectman with the town of Newcastle and she worked previously for Nash Telelphone Co., The First National Bank, Gallagher & Stein and at Riverside Boat Co. She was also a member of the Newcastle Planning Board and attended the Damariscotta Baptist Church.

    Mrs. Rose is survived by her daughter, Lynn Maloney and her husband Donald of Newcastle; two granddaughters, Kendra Maloney of Newcastle and Allison Maloney of Newcastle; her brother, Stuart Greenleaf of Boothbay; two sisters, Sara Thompson of California and Priscilla Harrison of Arizona; two great-grandchildren, Kayleigh-Ann Maloney and Evan Brewer; a special nephew, Kim Pinkham and his wife Sherry of Boothbay; four nieces, seven nephews, and her exchange student daughter, Mirja Ikaheimo of Finland.

    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Rose was preceded in death by her first husband John M. Pottle, Jr.; and a sister, Gladys Pinkham.

    Relatives and friends are invited to join Mrs. Rose’s family for a celebration of her life at 2 o’clock p.m. on Saturday afternoon, August 15, 2009 at her home at 335 Sheepscot Road in Newcastle.    Pastor Rick Newell will officiate.  Arrangements are under the direction of Smeltzer Family Cremation & Funeral Service, Waldoboro.  Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Mrs. Rose’s memory to Miles Memorial Hospital, c/o Miles Development Office, 35 Miles Street, Damariscotta, Maine 04543 or to Damariscotta Baptist Church, 4 Bristol Road, Damariscotta.

 

 

C. Audrey Giles Chase

C. Audrey Giles Chase, 95, of Edgecomb, died on Tuesday, August 11. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 14 at the Edgecomb Congregational Church at 10:30 a.m.
