Al Capone and The Old Jail

By Daren Wood

"No, you go in first," said Albert.

"No, I dared you first," said Robert.  It was a cool and calm day in late October when the sun started to go down, when Robert dared his best friend Albert to go inside the old jail.

"Do you think that Al Capone was actually jailed here?"

"I don't know, but we'll find out here in a few minutes," said Robert.

As Albert opened the rusty old door, musty air filled their lungs with a dim candle light lighting the jail just enough to see.

As Albert lead the way, Robert froze still and looked at an opened door. Robert opened it. They both saw many arms and tons of explosives. As they took a closer look, they found a back room. When they opened it, they saw the jail guard covered with dry blood and the only thing left of him was his skeleton and some pieces of his clothes. Robert and Albert took one look at that thing, and ran out of the back room before they had time to say a word to each other. As they ran out, Robert grabbed a knife off the wall just in case, and Albert grabbed a bomb as well.

As they descended deeper, Albert suddenly froze and tried to speak but could not. Robert slowly looked back at Albert and saw what he was all stiff about.  "Bl-Bloody jail bars," Albert finally managed to get out.

"And look," said Robert, "Skeletons on hanging ropes!" Robert and Albert clutched their throats.

As Albert cocked his head to the right, he pointed his finger at a white blur about fifty feet away and entering the next room. Albert said "Don’t tell me I just saw Al Capone's ghost!"

And Robert said, "Oh yes you did." Then BANG! A sound of a gun shot.

"I don't think we should go any farther," said Albert.

"I'm going to go a little farther and see what ís up," said Robert. As the two plunged deeper into the next room, they saw a written note by Al Capone: "Turn back now or you'll be hanged.  A.C."

"I bet that the guys at school are just playing around and are going to make fun of us tomorrow," said Robert.

"If this is a joke, they sure have me fooled," said Albert, half fainted and still looking at the note written on the wall.

"I bet as soon as we turn the next corner, we'll see the guy's tape recorder and their base."

They were wrong.

As soon as they turned the corner, a howling wind blew out the dim candle and an icy sheet covered their mouths. Something hard like a club knocked both of them out  in one swing. When Robert and Albert awoke from their daze, they could each feel a tight grip around their throats and could feel their heavy bodies wanting to touch the ground. With their faces getting a reddish purple with every second, Albert managed to get a few words out with his throat coming apart.

"I     guess     that     was     not     a joke       huh?" said Albert gasping for some relief.

Drawing a knife from his pocket that he took from the jail guards office, Robert cut the rope, dropped down on the floor taking a huge breath trying to get his blood circulating again. With Albert's face as purple as an egg plant, Robert cut the rope and dropped down with a thud. It took him a few minutes to recover and get his blood flowing again.

"OK, I've had enough," said Albert, and he pulled out the bomb he had grabbed earlier out of his jacket pocket.

"How in the world did Al Capone not manage to find that when you where being hanged with me?" exclaimed Robert.

"You got me there," said Albert, as he pulled a match out of his pocket.  "Be ready to run when I light this fuse."

"I thought you were a chicken?" said Robert, "That's why I brought you in here."

"You have me all wrong," said Albert. And with that, he lit the fuse with a match and they busted it with full steam toward the shut door. As the door smashed into pieces the boys flew through the air when the bomb exploded. They hit the ground with a tremendous jolt, and covered their faces.

Albert woke up lying in his bed stone still, and his alarm clock dinging away. As Albert sat up, he thought about his dream and thought that it was real, but realized it was just a dream. He met Robert by the edge of his driveway to go to school, Albert talked to Robert about his dream and Robert said that he had the same dream as well! "Do you think that since we had the same dream, that the dream might have happened just like in the horror movies?"

"Are you dumb Albert? That only happens in the movies, not in reality." said Robert.

"Do you want to go to the old jail just to make sure?" said Albert.

"Why not?" said Robert.

Albert and Robert walked to the old jail to make sure it was just a dream, but when they got there the jail was blown to pieces.

"The Case of the Cursed Necklace"

By Amand  Marcus

Tony was coming home from work in his red convertible.  He was trying to get home as fast as he could. He had this beautiful diamond and sapphire necklace to give his wife for their anniversary. It was down pouring so hard! Then suddenly there was a red light and he tried to stop, but he spun out and crashed!

Then Tony woke up in a graveyard across from this big haunted house. The haunted house had bent shingles, the windows were shattered, the stairs were half way broken, and there was a pumpkin in the back yard, a very odd shaped pumpkin. When looking at the pumpkin he heard the sound of a piano playing inside, it was playing Symphony Number 9.

Then he realized, "Oh my, I have to get home to my wife! It is our anniversary! Wait, where is my car? I better go ask the people in that house for directions!"

So he went up the stairs and realized how creaky the stairs were. He knocked on the door and said, "Is anyone home? Hello? It is my........" Then he stopped himself when he heard these BIG and LOUD footsteps behind him. When he turned around he saw a ten foot pumpkin moving toward him! Right when he saw that pumpkin his heart stopped, he could barely breathe and there was a drip of sweat rolling down his cheek! Then the pumpkin's mouth opened wide and ate Tony!

Tony woke up in the hospital. Megan was there and she was so thrilled he woke up! Tony said. "What happened?"

"You got in a car crash, but you are going to be alright," said Megan. Then Megan gave Tony his anniversary present.

"What is it?"

"Why don't you open it up!"

"Oh, it is a tie! Thank you! I see you found your present. It looks so beautiful on you."

"Yes, I love it. The police found it in your car."

The night that Tony got home from the hospital, he took Megan to The Marcus Hill, the most romantic restaurant in Wiscasset. As Tony and Megan were finishing their pieces of chocolate cake, Tony was telling Megan about his terrible dream he had about the pumpkin eating him. Suddenly, Megan choked on a piece of cake! Luckily, there was someone there who knew the Heimlich maneuver!

Tony and Megan finally got home and went straight to bed  because both of them had had a very long day! When they woke up, it was morning so Tony brushed his teeth and took a shower. When Tony came out into the bedroom, he saw Megan on the floor dead with the necklace choking her!  When Tony saw his wife dead, he had a heart attack, or so they thought.

A couple days later, one of Tony and Megan's neighbors, Molly Campbell, came by to drop off a package at their house. She saw the door wide open and a blood path leading from the bedroom. When Molly got into the room she saw Tony and Megan on the floor drenched in blood! Molly was so scared that she got short of breath and then she fainted!

A year later another couple bought the house. They moved in on their anniversary. When the couple went into the master bedroom they saw this beautiful diamond and sapphire necklace on the floor near the bed. "Oh isn't it beautiful?"

Then they heard the sound of a piano playing Symphony Number 9.

The Genie

By Khidra Weisman

There was fog, big fog, It was a day before Halloween.  My mom was driving me to Hallowell.  As we got to the town, I noticed a rather particular store. It was mysterious, and I was curious but like they say, "Curiosity killed the cat!" I was getting myself into something I would always regret, but I did not know at the time. "Mom," I said, "Can we enter that store?"

"Sure Brooke," my mom said with a slight nod.   We parked and walked towards the store. I noticed  the moon was yellow with a tilted smile. As I entered the store I noticed the lighting was a light green and it shone on books, book shelves, grandfather clocks, and jewelry boxes. I wandered around a little and noticed a little room. I entered, then something caught my eye. It was a black box made with fine wood and carved nicely.

I picked it up and went to the cashier. There he was, an old man that looked Chinese with a sort of Merlin beard and mustache. He wore a purple  tunic with gold stars and a matching hat. "Can I help you?" he asked in a  Chinese accent.

"I'd like to buy this please." As I showed him the box his eyes widened.

"You want to buy this?" he asked.

"Yes." I replied.

"I don't think you should," answered the old man.  As he was saying I shouldn't buy it   I wanted it even more.

"Yes, yes I do want to buy it," I said eagerly.

"OK, but don't say I didn't warn you! It will be $6.66." replied the man. I handed him the money and as I left I heard him whisper something in a foreign language.

When I got home I ran to my room and opened my box.  The bottom of the box was velvet. I felt a bump on one of the sides, and when I pushed it I heard a slight click and the bottom opened revealing a little gold genie bottle. I picked it up and trying to make fun of Aladdin, I rubbed the genie bottle and out of the bottle came a black genie.

I was so amazed. I could not scream, all I could do was stare and drool. Then the genie said, "Good evening! I am here to grant you three wishes, but first you have to sign a little insignificant contract. It allows me to grant you three wishes."

"Why?" I managed to say still baffled.

"Because if you do I can grant you three wishes, I mean what can you lose? Your life?" Then he gave a deep laugh.

"I don't know," I said.  "I don't think I should."

"Oh come on what could go wrong?" replied the genie with a grin.     "Okay," I sighed. "I'll read the contract, but I hated reading and it was eight pages with little words, so I just gave up and signed.

"Splendid," he said. "What is your first wish? Oh, but wish carefully, after all I have a reputation."

"Mmm.........I wish I had a palace," I commanded.

"Your wish is my command," he said. There was a palace in front of me alright, but it was a Barbie plastic palace!

"Hey I meant a big one for me!"

"I told you to wish carefully," he replied with a grin.

"I wish I had a BIG dog for me."

With a smile, the genie said "Your wish is my command," he murmured and again there was a dog in front of me alright, but it was huge, the size of Clifford!

"Hey, I meant a normal sized dog!" I screamed.

"You said big," he said calmly.

"Oh, I just wish you would get my wish right," I screamed.

"Your wish is my command," he screamed.

"No!" I screamed suddenly.  The dog and palace went to my preferred size. "That was not my last wish."

"Well you said I wish," he replied, "but now to pay the price for your three wishes."

"What do you mean?" I asked.     "You signed a contract that said that if I granted you three wishes, you owed me your soul," he screamed, and that's when I realized I had just sold my soul to the devil.
