Westport Island Selectmen set meeting with assessor

By CHARLOTTE BOYNTON

Staff Reporter

Westport Island Selectmen have scheduled a meeting with Eugene Huskins, the town’s certified assessor, to address Deidre Dunlop’s concerns about her assessment. She is the sister of First Selectman George Richardson.

In an e-mail sent to the selectmen Oct. 26, Dunlop asked for a meeting with Huskins because she is challenging the value and fairness of the assessment of her Dewey Way home.

During Monday’s meeting Dunlop’s daughter, Teresa, was told that her mother’s meeting with Huskins would be November 21, at 9:30 a.m. Richardson also gave her an abatement application for her mother in the event Dunlop wanted to formally submit an abatement application.

Teresa questioned why it took nearly a month to get an appointment with the assessor. She was told that it was the earliest that Huskins could meet with them.

During the citizens comments of the selectmen’s meeting Teresa submitted six questions to the board.

The questions included; "Who is responsible for updating the town Website? Where is the notice of availability of the Shoreland Zoning Ordinance posted? What town official made the decision that the site plan review ordinance does not apply to the expansion of the commercial use of the wharf upon lots of Chuck Richardson and where is a copy of that written decision to be found? Where was the Planning Board review of this expansion of the commercial wharf? Where is a written copy of that decision to be found? How could a town building permit be issued prior to all necessary town reviews being completed?"

The selectmen tabled the questions until another meeting to allow time to research the questions.

Teresa also read a letter written by Chuck Richardson’s sister, Corinne Richardson, who lives in Montana. The letter was sent to Chuck telling him that she had asked the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to do a site visit to his wharf on Westport Island to determine if the alternations that he has done are proper and permitted.

She indicated in her letter that she had heard from a number of people who are concerned with what is happening to the landscape around the wharf. She also said in her letter, "I understand from Maine DEP that you have a permit for specific alternations but what you are doing may fall outside the scope of the permit."

The selectmen made no comment on the private letter being read in the public meeting that was sent by a sister to her brother.

In other business the selectmen scheduled a special selectmen’s meeting December 1 to open the bids for the Ferry Landing project.

The selectmen plan to meet Friday, November 6 at noon with the Wright Property Committee to review the committee charter and other agenda items.

The board accepted the resignation of planning board member Chris Webber, and will send him a letter thanking him for service to the town.

John Crispin was appointed an alternate member for a three-year term.
