Alfred R. Huskins

Alfred R. Huskins, 85, of Southport died Sunday, December 13 at the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews Village after a period failing health.

Alfred was born October 19, 1924 in Nova Scotia, the son of Edgar and Sadie Swimms Huskins, and attended Southport schools and Boothbay High School. He was a longtime employee of the Lusty Lobster Pound on Southport, and also mowed lawns and did home caretaking work.

He loved his dogs, Benji and Buffy.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Estella Roberts Huskins, who died in 1984.

Survivors include his wife Marlene Huskins-Pottle of Southport; a son, Eugene Huskins and his wife Vickie of Southport; a stepdaughter, Sally Barter and her husband Calvin of Boothbay Harbor; a stepson Clayton Pottle and his wife Cindy of Southport; two brothers, Walter Huskins of Gardiner and Clifford Huskins of West Boothbay Harbor; three grandchildren, Beth Teele of Boothbay, Kelly  Fosterling  of  Concord, N.H. and Mark Huskins of  Pittsfield; four great- grandchildren and four step grandchildren.

A family graveside service will be held in the spring.

Bertha V. Paquett

Bertha V. Paquett, 92, of Edgecomb, died December 9 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.

Captain John A. Cummings

Captain John Arthur Cummings died on December 11, 2009 in the presence of his loving family members after a lengthy illness. John was born in East Boothbay on April 16, 1941. He grew up as a young man at the family shipyard, Goudy & Stevens in East Boothbay.

He graduated from Boothbay Region High School where he excelled in football. After graduating from Maine Maritime Academy with an engineering degree, he worked in the shipping industry until retiring in 2003 from Hvide Marine Shipping as Senior Captain with 36 years of service.

He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife who was his high school sweetheart, Jill, son, Jeffrey and wife Kathy Cummings, daughter, Jean & husband Scott Huffman, two grandchildren Daniel Cummings, Aubrey Huffman, two step-grandchildren, Kendralyn & Clayton Ruth, sister Eloise Blazy, father-in-law Louis Garcelon.

He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Eva Cummings, brother, Frank Cummings III and mother-in-law Lucy Garcelon.

A memorial service will be Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Forrest Hill Funeral Home-Young & Prill Chapel in Stuart.

Sophie M. Lombara

Sophie M. Lombara, 93, of Wiscasset, passed away at her home on the morning of December 14.

Born on January 31, 1916 in Saugus, Mass., she was the daughter of Stanley and Anna (Rydzewski) Ostrowski.

Sophie grew up in Lynn, Mass and attended St. Michael's School as well as the Breed School in Lynn. In 1938, she married Stanley Lombara at St. Michael's Church, the same church where she attended school.

For many years she helped her husband in his retail photo stores in both Lynn and Melrose, Mass. The couple moved to Wiscasset during the 1970s, where they operated the Wiscasset Country Store on Route 1.

They loved to travel and made it to Poland several times to visit family.

She enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with her family, including her special cat Onyx.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2000. She is survived by a son, Stanley and his wife Ella Florence Lombara of Wakefield, New Hampshire; a daughter, Anna Ranta of Wiscasset; 3 sisters, Stella Krzywicki of Salem, Mass., Steffe Dembowski of Lynn, Mass. and Lottie O'Malley of Lynn, Mass.; 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, December 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Newcastle. She will be laid to rest with her husband in the St. Patrick's Cemetery following the service. Lucy M. Snowman

Lucy M. Snowman, 95, a lifetime resident of the Hendricks Hill Road, Southport died Friday, December 11 at the Safe Havens in Boothbay Harbor.

Lucy was born September 21, 1914 in Boothbay Harbor, the daughter of Melville and Maude Burnham Alley, and is a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School.

She married Leland M. Snowman at a young age, and together raised their five children on Southport where she worked different odd jobs, including Robinson’s Wharf baking pies, caretaking her neighbors and cleaning homes.

An active community member, Lucy was a member of the Southport United Methodist Church, its United Methodist Women, and Southport Mothers Club, served a term on the school board, and enjoyed cooking for many community events.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leland Snowman, who died in 1999, and her five siblings.

Survivors include her five children, Nancy Hurst and her husband John of Boothbay Harbor, Beverly Tibbetts and her husband Gordon of Southport, Sylvia Norwood and her husband Norman of Southport, Linda Dowling of Southport, and Gary Snowman and his wife Stephanie of Topsham; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to visit with the family Friday, Dec. 18 6-8 p.m. at the Simmons Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd, Boothbay. A celebration of Lucy’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 19 at the Southport United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Lisa Burger officiating. Interment will be in the Decker Cemetery.

Mattie May Shields

Mattie Mae Shields, two months, infant daughter of the Reverend Wes and Laura Shields, died suddenly on Friday, December 11, 2009.

A service of remembrance was held 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 16 at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor.

Mildred A. Coosard

Mildred A. "Millie" Coosard, 87, of East Boothbay died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009 at Amenity Manor in Topsham.

She was born in Augusta, the daughter of George and Cora Harvey.

She was predeceased by her parents, four siblings and former husband, Arthur Abraham Gilley, all of Augusta.

Millie spent most of her working career as a cook in the Boothbay region; both for the Head Start program and public school system.

Her hobbies included knitting, sewing and crocheting and she spent many hours playing cribbage. Some of her favorite places included Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, the mountains of New Hampshire and Siesta Key, Florida. For many years she and her husband, Jere, would enjoy sunsets at Ocean Point.

Millie leaves behind loving memories of time spent with family and friends. Thanksgiving, surrounded by her many family members, was the love of her life.

Survivors include her husband, Jere; daughters, Pat (husband Paul Fry) of Pennsylvania, Kathy Getchell of Littleton Colo., Marie Gilley (husband Ed Lydecker) of Sarasota, Fla., Lorna Gilley (husband Gene Stover) of Florida and Pennsylvania, and Lynn Gilley Orne of Southport and special friend, Michael Martin. She also leaves behind a favorite nephew, Michael Coosard of Wheeler, Mich. Grandchildren include Richard and Scott Minoty and families, Shannon Khroh and family, Mike, Darlene and Donna Getchell and families, Joel Lydecker, Christian Lydecker and family, and Benjamin Morse and family.

Remaining family members include several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

On Monday, December 14, during a celebration of her life, a touching tribute included favorite scriptures, prayers and music led by family members. Officiating clergy was Alan Barker, M.D. Interment will be held at a later date.

Thomas M. Norton

Thomas Moxon Norton, formerly of Burnt Island Light Station and Southport, as well as Key Largo and Punta Gorda, Florida, died suddenly on December 12, 2009. He was the son of the late Elizabeth Moxon and Robert Bennett Norton of Falmouth Foreside.

Tom was born in Providence, Rhode Island, May 9, 1945 and grew up in Falmouth, Foreside. He graduated from Falmouth High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed at the Burnt Island Light Station with his wife, Betsy and new son, Stuart.

Tom won many awards for excellent care and maintenance of the lighthouse and was known for the many coats of paint he put on the exterior. Tom had major positions managing area boatyards as well as owning several boat brokerages in the Boothbay Harbor area.

After piloting a Grand Banks trawler through the inland waterway to Florida in late November 1992 with his good friend, John Fossett, Tom and Betsy settled in Key Largo where they restored the boat. After selling the boat, Tom was the outside yard manager of Plantation Key Marina.

At time of retirement, they moved to Punta Gorda where he worked in sales and marine survey.

Tom was a member of Masonic Lodge #144 and a member of the Portland, Southport and Downeast Harbor Yacht Clubs.

Tom is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann (Smith) Norton; a son, Stuart Brooks Norton and wife Stephanie; beloved grandchildren Robert Tucker and Sophie Elizabeth Norton of Falmouth; daughter, Jennifer Henningsen, and husband, Anker of Topeka, Kansas; a sister, Elizabeth (Chris) Birchfield and husband Stephen DiBiaso of Cornish and Port Charlotte, Florida; and a brother, Robert Bennett Norton and wife, Judith of Tenants Harbor and Jackman; and several nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held in Port Charlotte, December 17, and a summer service in Maine to be announced.

June L. Tibbetts

June L. Tibbetts, 47, of Dresden, died unexpectedly on November 28. She was born in Boothbay Harbor to Arthur and Marion Tibbetts on June 24, 1962.

She liked plants and painting on environmental canvases and had a knack for seeing the positive side of a situation. A few of her favorite things were animals, roses, sea shells, and the ocean.

She is survived by her boyfriend of 10 years, David Morse; sisters, Lorna Tibbetts of Brunswick, and Lynn Shaw of Wiscasset; niece and nephews, Corrina Tibbetts, Stephen Tibbetts, and Christopher Tibbetts.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a humane society in her memory.

William C. Young

William Carnes Young, 82, of West Boothbay Harbor, formerly of Brunswick, died Saturday, December 5 at St. Andrew’s Hospital after several years of failing health.

He was born on August 11, 1927 in Lynn, Mass., the son of William Carnes, Sr., and Margaret (Casey) Young.

Suspending his education to serve in World War II, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After the war, while stationed at Quonset Point NAS in Rhode Island during the Korean conflict, he met his future wife, Jane Gilmore Smith of Brunswick, who was then attached to the WAVES. They were married on 4 May 1957. Continuing his service in the Atlantic fleet, Bill saw tours of duty in the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean.

Following his retirement from active duty in 1966, he was employed in the aerospace industry, travelling to Vietnam and Thailand as a civilian contractor for RCA. Relocating to southern New Hampshire in 1968, Bill worked for Sanders Associates and Ford Aerospace. Upon his civilian retirement in 1990, he chose to settle permanently in Boothbay Harbor, which had long been a favored vacation spot.

Bill found delight in his pets and enjoyed bird watching and gardening. He was a lifelong fan of Boston’s professional sports teams, particularly the Red Sox and Patriots. A jazz aficionado, he cherished both an extensive collection of recordings and vivid memories of performances by luminaries of the genre, some of whom he had met personally backstage. Bill will be remembered not only for his outgoing personality and quick wit but above all for his love of the country he had been so proud to serve in uniform for so much of his life.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Jane; his son, William S. of Boston, Mass., and his son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter Terrence P., Cary C. and Katharine J. Young of Tampa, Florida. He is also survived by his friend and brother-in-law, Eugene T. Smith of Mere Point, Brunswick, as well as nieces and nephews in whom he always took a lively interest.

The Young family is grateful to the staff of St. Andrew’s Hospital and St. Andrew’s Home Health for their kind and compassionate care throughout his last years.
