Nancy Wilson lived in a yurt for 12 years, played the cello, performed with Hearts Ever Young and was a talented writer, Conrad “Doc” Schilke said at the 14th annual Lincoln County Triad Senior Appreciation Day on Oct. 18.

The senior-centered organization honored Wilson with the Senior of the Year award and made a donation to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in her memory. Wilson had attended and wrote about all the 13 previous senior appreciation days, but died Sept. 21.

Throughout the day, the 200-plus attendees got to peruse 40 booths, with information ranging from insurance to assisted living to banking.

After lunch, during which the Holy Mackerels played in the background, Chief Ron Young of the Damariscotta Police Department gave his keynote speech.

Young warned seniors about scams, gave some tips about locking doors, securing prescriptions and using motion sensor lights, and welcomed any of the attendees to call him or other police and sheriff departments with questions.

When someone in the crowd shouted: “What's your number?” Young responded, “9-1-1,” which got a big laugh.

Young also told several humorous anecdotes that kept the mood light, while also imparting safety information.

Debbie Mullen, Lincoln County TRIAD Chair, said this year's event was the most successful to date, garnering about 60 more attendees than in previous years.

According to Mullen, seniors came from all over Maine for the free event, including Bath, Bremen, Bristol, Damariscotta, East Boothbay, Edgecomb, Glen Cove, Jefferson, Nobleboro, Norridgewock, Pemaquid Harbor, Rockland, Rockport, Sheepscot, South Bristol, Southport, Trevett, Union, Waldoboro, Warren, Whitefield, Wiscasset, Woolwich, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor; and from East Windsor, Connecticut and Charleston, South Carolina.
