Airport plan on tap for Wiscasset selectmen tonight

The Wiscasset Municipal Airport’s proposed next master plan faces its second bid at approval Tuesday night.

Board members split on it June 3. Since then, two new members have been elected and new developments have unfolded regarding the issue of clearing the runway’s airspace of trees. Some of the trees sticking into the airspace are at the airport’s neighbor, Chewonki Campground.

Changes the campground’s owners have proposed for the master plan have now been reviewed by Stantec Consulting Services; the firm’s July 17 letter to Selectmen’s Chairman Pam Dunning recommends the board reject most of those proposed changes. The master plan is just that, a vision, not an authorization for the town to remove any trees on private property before an agreement has been negotiated and a plan designed, to pinpoint which trees would be pruned or taken down, according to Stantec’s letter.

The letter also indicates the firm is unsure why the campground is proposing one of the changes; and that the firm has not had enough time to confirm an assessment by an engineer for the campground, about the number of trees affected.

The board is set to meet at 7 p.m. in the municipal building’s meeting room.
