Alna officials mull rules against dumping

A prospective Alna dumping ordinance remains in the planning stages while selectmen determine if it would do any good.

"I want something with teeth in it," Third Selectman David Reingardt said at the June 7 meeting of the Alna Board of Selectmen. He plans to report back to the board after doing more research.

So far, he said, "It sounds like you'd have to catch them in the act."

"If we find out it's not enforceable, it's a waste of time," First Selectman David Abbott said

Some residents have raised concerns, such as whether or not property owners could be held responsible for someone dumping on their land, Reingardt said later.

A number of properties around town have been subjected to dumping. In March, one such site on Rabbit Path Road inspired a volunteer cleanup effort and got selectmen talking about rules and fines to address the problem.

Any proposed ordinance would need residents' approval.

Selectmen will meet again at the town office Thursday, June 14, at 6:30 p.m., and then every other Thursday starting June 28. The meeting weeks were shifted to avoid Fourth of July week, selectmen said.
