An Alna man was hospitalized with a head injury Nov. 22 following a shooting incident on West Alna Road in Alna, authorities said. AJ Lang, 22, has been released from Maine Medical Center, a spokeswoman for the Portland hospital said Nov. 24.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Wiscasset Ambulance, Alna First Responders and Maine State Police detectives and evidence technicians responded to the residence, following a 7:17 a.m. Nov. 22, report of a woman with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a sheriff’s office press release and Maine State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland.

A 23-year-old woman was found dead, the press release from the sheriff’s office states.

A second person at the residence, Lang, had a head injury and was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center for treatment. The press release late Saturday afternoon described Lang’s condition as serious, but stable. The injury of the person hospitalized was a gunshot wound, McCausland said in a telephone interview Saturday.

“(The) investigation has found the (woman’s) fatal wound ... to be self-inflicted and the injury to Mr. Lang to be accidental,” the press release from the sheriff’s office states. Investigators left the scene shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday.

Because the consensus among investigators was that the woman’s death was a suicide, the sheriff’s office would be handling the incident, McCausland said. He described the incident as “an unusual set of circumstances.”

On Monday, Nov. 24, Sheriff’s Lt. Michael Murphy said the department has mostly wrapped up its investigation and will be awaiting results from the state medical examiner’s office for confirmation of the investigation’s findings on the woman’s death.
