Alna has a new third selectman. In the only contest of local elections on Friday, March 20, Planning Board Chairman Douglas Baston defeated incumbent Third Selectman David Reingardt, 102-62.

In an interview after the results were announced at the Alna fire station, Baston thanked voters and praised Reingardt, who had sought a third, two-year term in the seat.

“David Reingardt was a good third selectman,” Baston said. “I would not have been disappointed to lose to him.

“I hope he stays active in town politics, and I would come to him for advice,” Baston said.

As a result of Baston’s win, the planning board will lose its longtime chairman. Baston has said if he got on the board of selectmen, he would leave the planning board.

Baston also served about four years as an Alna selectman in the early 1990s.

Voters on Friday elected Melissa Spinney second selectman. Spinney got 133 votes and was unopposed on the ballot. Jonathan Villeneuve did not seek reelection.

In other elections, unopposed incumbents Jeffrey Verney, road commissioner, and Aaron Miller, treasurer, each won another one-year term. Barbara Baston won her first full term representing Alna on Regional School Unit 12’s board.

Verney and Barbara Baston each received 145 votes; Miller, 141.
