Barnes resigns Wiscasset selectman’s seat

Wiscasset Selectman Bill Barnes has resigned from the board, saying he no longer has the time due to work.

He’s busy haying and helping at son Shawn Barnes’ business, Mike’s Log Cabin, the lifelong Wiscasset resident said in a telephone interview Tuesday. Town Manager Marian Anderson received his resignation Monday.

“I just don’t have the time to put into (the board),” Barnes said. He thanked voters for their support. “I wish I had the time to keep doing right by them.”

Barnes, 72, does not see himself running for selectman again. “No, I’m going to enjoy the time that I have left,” he said.

Chairman Ben Rines Jr., who was elected along with Barnes to the board in June 2014, called Barnes’ departure from the seat a great loss. “I really liked working with Bill. He brought a lot of knowledge of Wiscasset, and he will be missed.

“I trust that he will come in from time to time to set us straight,” Rines added.

The letter Barnes turned in at the municipal building said only that he was resigning, Anderson said Monday.

She said Barnes’ institutional knowledge about the community was a help to her in her first year as town manager. “I’ve enjoyed working with him.”

Barnes previously served on Wiscasset’s select and planning boards before returning as a selectman last year. He served as vice chairman until June 2015.

Selectmen on Aug. 4 set a Nov. 3 special election for the vacant seat. They accepted Barnes’ resignation with regret.
