Brant Perkins, 56, of Boothbay Harbor, was sentenced on Friday, April 29, after pleading guilty under an Alford plea to charges including Sexual Abuse of a Minor, two counts of Tampering with a Witness, and one count of Possession of Sexually Explicit Material of a Minor Under 12.

Perkins was sentenced to Two Bridges Regional Jail for 15 months for the primary count of Sexual Abuse of a Minor, stemming from a 2012 case involving a former karate student. The two Tampering with a Witness charges included seven-year sentences, all but nine months suspended, and probation for three years, and the single count of Possession of Sexually Explicit Material of a Minor Under 12 carried a sentence of three years, all suspended, and probation of two years.

By taking an Alford plea, Perkins maintains his right to appeal the charges, which he has said he will do. He has also accrued “good time” which will count against the sentence. When all is taken into account, Perkins could be released late this summer.

If he is unsuccessful in his appeals, Perkins will have to register as a sex offender for life, and as a felon, will be forbidden from owning or using a firearm for life. Any future arrests will carry more serious penalties than he would otherwise have faced.

Perkins is currently being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail.
