Christopher Juntura is looking to grow his Wood Lane, Wiscasset hop farm into a brewery. The Topsham man told the planning board Monday night, he expects the business to have about five to 10 employees.

“It sounds like a great idea,” member Deb Pooler said. “It’s a good spot for one,” near Route 1, she said.

According to Juntura’s application for a site plan review and his remarks to the board, he will use most of his father Cecilio Juntura’s 21.8-acre property as a farm. Christopher Juntura wants a 25-foot by 40-foot building for the brewery. He said he will have the well water tested and, if needed, filtered or otherwise adjusted.

Westbrook’s Joshua Ward joined him at the applicant’s table. Juntura told the board Ward is a business associate and a brewer.

The board told Juntura to return with a site plan. Members anticipate walking the site. No date was set.

In April 2016, the board approved Juntura’s plan for a starter acre of hops and a pump house to extract water to irrigate the hop yard.

Also Monday, in a majority vote with Karl Olson opposed, Steve Kaplan won approval to flatten a house and land at his and Dan Kaplan’s property at 360 Bath Road, where they own the sales and service business Mid Maine Generator. The two told the board, McGee Construction has equipment on-site  and is ready to do the work that involves up to an acre and a half of the 13-acre property. The firm will remove stumps, regrade the land, control erosion and, when the site is leveled, stabilize it with hay and mulch, according to Steve Kaplan’s application.
