Call for docents and greeters at Wiscasset Old Jail

Tue, 05/08/2018 - 7:45am

The Old Jail on Federal Street in Wiscasset opens for the season on Saturday, June 2. This  massive 200-year-old granite structure is a landmark for visitors, and we need a few more volunteers to help give those visitors a captivating experience.

Tour guides, called docents, take us from our high-tech world back to earlier times, which may give us new perspective on our own lives. Our docents start their tours with a prepared narrative and pepper it with details and anecdotes that illustrate life in Wiscasset two centuries ago.

Greeters assist by collecting entrance fees and meeting with visitors when a tour is in progress. Some greeters become docents, but anyone who enjoys meeting new people is welcome.

Since the Jail is open only on weekends from June through September, the volunteer commitment is minimal — just four hours on one day per month or two hours twice per month.

Anyone from high school age up is welcome to join the Lincoln County Historical Association and become a docent or greeter.  Please email Christine Hopf-Lovette at info@lincolncountyhistory.com or call 207-522-6397.

The Lincoln County Historical Association is a non-profit organization that provides stewardship for the 1754 Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta, the 1761 Pownalborough Court House in Dresden, and the 1811 Old Jail and Museum in Wiscasset.  For more information, please visit www.lincolncountyhistory.orgor Facebook at Lincoln County Historical Association (Maine).
