Chair yoga series to benefit St. Philip’s Church steeple fund

Tue, 04/19/2016 - 7:15am

Susan Gallagher of Westport Island, certified yoga instructor, will lead an hour’s chair yoga practice beginning at 9:30 a.m. each Saturday at St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St. in Wiscasset. The charge is $10 for adults, with an $8 charge for older child and senior practitioners. No mat is necessary, but participants should wear loose clothing. All funds are donated to the St. Philip’s Church Steeple Fund.

According to the Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga website, the postures, based on 5,000 year-old asanas and breathing techniques, have been modified to make them doable by all levels of fitness and ranges of motion. Also, because the postures incorporate yoga breathing, they are more complete and more effective exercise for all, but particularly for those with limited mobility. The site claims that “[t]hese deep breathing techniques more fully oxygenate your body and massage your organs.  This improves your energy and mental clarity while reducing pain and anxiety.”

St. Philip’s is an historic structure badly in need of continued TLC, and especially its steeple, which has been partially rehabilitated. Water damage and other reconstruction lie ahead to assure that the graceful belfry dots the Wiscasset skyline for many years to come.

No matter your age level, ability level, mobility level, plan to start your Saturdays experiencing this new exercise form. For further information, contact Gallagher at susan_gllghr@yahoo.com , or St. Philip’s Church at 882-7184.
