Charles R. Osborn

Charles R. Osborn, 73, of Barters Island, Boothbay died October 23, 2012 surrounded by his family at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough after a valiant fight against heart disease.

Charles was born August 13, 1939 in Orange, N.J. to Robert and Martha Waters Osborn. He graduated from Livingston High School in the class of 1957. He later graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1961 and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

He flew in the U.S. Army Air Corp during Vietnam. He also flew in the National Guard for two years. He was the manager for Princeton Airways, a regional airline. He worked as a math teacher at Sayreville High School in New Jersey for 25 years until he retired in 1995 to Boothbay. He and his family have summered in the Boothbay region since the 1940s.

He was a very active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Boothbay Harbor. He was treasurer of the Boothbay Civic Association for many years and a member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family, flying, boating, gardening and playing bridge. He was well known for growing delicious tomatoes and was known as the “Island Tomato King.”

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Caroline Williams.

He is survived by his loving family, his wife of 51 years, Betty Osborn of Barter’s Island; sons, Allan Osborn and his wife, Linda of Milford, N.J. and Mark Osborn of Boothbay Harbor; granddaughter, Olivia Osborn of Milford, N.J.; sister-in-law, Linda Krusen of South Carolina; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
