Community support for living with cancer

Thu, 10/30/2014 - 10:00am

Creating Community is a socially supportive group designed to connect people with one another as they navigate living with cancer.

The kick-off meeting for Creating Community will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in room 1 of Wiscasset High School, who graciously offered space to make this concept possible for mid-coast communities.

Whether a patient or a family member, this group format provides an opportunity for people to find others in the community coping with the challenges of illness and treatment.

Following a Native American traditional style of listening and communicating, the format creates a safe space in which people can feel comfortable expressing themselves with acceptance and compassion.

The first session will outline the group format and answer questions for those who are curious and may be interested in attending future Creating Community gatherings.

Meetings are tentatively planned bi-monthly on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The open format allows people to come and go as needed, attending as little or as often as desired.

Creating Community is sponsored by It's My Death, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Wiscasset. For more information, contact IMD at 207-240-3186 or visit www.itsmydeath.com.
