Doris L. Rayl

Doris L. Rayl, 86, died February 7 at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor surrounded by her loving family.  

She was born December 1, 1926 in Westervelt, Ill., to Ellet and Luna Lichtenwalter.  She grew up in Kokomo, Ind., graduating from Kokomo High School.  She attended Indiana University where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.

She married Dallas Rayl on June 28, 1947. They resided in Canton, Ohio from 1948 to 1976. She was a homemaker and active volunteer all of her life.

In Canton, she was a member of Brookside Country Club, Red Cross Grey Lady at Aultman Hospital, Arboretum Garden Club, and Women’s Committee of the Canton Symphony Orchestra.

The family later moved to Ligonier, Pa., where she was publicity chairman for the arts committee of the Ligonier Valley Library, and was a member of the Latrobe Area Hospital Aid Society, Latrobe Country Club, Rolling Rock Club, and at St. Michael’s Church where she was president of The Women of St. Michael and Directoress of the Altar Guild.

Doris and Dallas later moved to Sarasota, Fla. She was a member of the Church of the Redeemer and a member of The Meadows Country Club.

Doris and Dallas bought a summer home on Southport Island in the early 1980s.  They enjoyed coming to Maine every summer and spending time with their family at their cottage.

In Maine, she was a member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and the Southport Yacht Club.  She was a member of All Saints by the Sea Episcopal Church on Southport where she was active on the Altar Guild. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Dallas Rayl and by her sisters, Mildred Hoke, Frances McCoy, and Leah Cunningham.

Doris is survived by her loving daughter, Cindy Woodruff of Dublin, Ohio; loving son, Brian Rayl and his wife Lynne of Haymarket, Va. Grandchildren, Scott Woodruff and his wife Jennifer, Chris Woodruff and his wife Barb, Megan Woodruff, Brooke O’Keefe and her husband Ken, James Rayl and his wife Tracy, and Jeff Rayl; great-grandchildren, Sadie and Chloe Woodruff, Celeste and Paige Woodruff, Brayden and Rory O’Keefe, and Lillian and Cheyenne Rayl;  nephew, Ellet Hoke.

A service to celebrate Doris’ life will be held at All Saints by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Southport at a date to be announced. Contributions in Doris’ memory may be made to the Boothbay Region YMCA, P.O. Box 500, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538 or to a charity of your choice.
