Dorothy Malone

Mon, 04/25/2016 - 1:00pm

Dorothy Malone, 89, of Bridge Road, Westport Island died Friday, April 22 at her home surrounded by her family.

Dorothy was born in Bath, the daughter of Colin R. and Dorothy W. (Stevenson) Dunn, and, like her parents, was a long-time resident of Westport Island.

Dorothy graduated from Morse High School in Bath in 1945, and then attended Roosevelt College in Chicago, Illinois. After earning a BA degree, she returned to her home state and was employed as a social worker for the state of Maine. Following her marriage to Richard H. Malone in 1960, she and her husband owned and operated Malone’s Honda in Brunswick and Portland until 1974. After retiring from the motorcycle business, Dorothy became an independent realtor, working from her home on Westport Island for many years.

Dorothy was a skilled gardener and a member of the Garden Club of Wiscasset. Her knowledge and love of plants was shared with her daughters and friends, and the gardens she nurtured will continue to bloom in her memory. In 2002, she assisted with the posthumous publication of her husband’s book about the life and work of Monhegan Island artist Samuel Peter Rolt Triscott.

She also served on the Westport Island Planning Board, was a member of local bridge and book clubs, restored antique pottery and picture frames, and did needle work. She loved the many pets she rescued over the years, as well as the animals and birds around her home, and was proud to have served a daily meal to her personal murder of crows for over 40 years.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Nancy Malone-Appleton of Wiscasset, Denise Malone of Westport Island, and Sheila Koughan and her husband Christopher Ryan of Bristol, Connecticut. She also leaves her stepson, Keith P. Malone and his wife Mary Beth of Westbrook; her stepdaughter Diane Perry and her husband Brian of North Berwick; close family friend Aline Cooley of Tallahassee, Florida; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Malone, and her son, Gregory.
