Earle H. Smith Jr.

Earle H. Smith Jr., 85, of Trevett, died peacefully on Feb. 6, 2016 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.

Earle was born in Salem, Massachusetts in February 1930 to Earle and Edna (Little) Smith. He grew up in Marblehead, graduating from Marblehead High School in 1948, and from Northeastern University in 1954. He served in the Army National Guard from 1948 to 1957. In 1954, he married Arlene Goyea. Earle and Arlene were married for 61 years. He worked for the Federal Milk Market Administrator in both the Boston, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut offices as an auditing supervisor, retiring in 1985.

Earle always liked woodworking and anything related to the ocean. He built a 30-foot schooner and enjoyed summers sailing the New England coast. In addition, he built his Maine home, retiring to it in 1995.

He was a Boy Scout leader in Connecticut. He was a church trustee and enjoyed helping to maintain church buildings in both South Windsor, Connecticut and Boothbay Harbor. He is a past commander of the Wawenock Sail and Power Squadron and a member of the Starr King Lodge A.F. & A.M.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Richard C. Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; sister, Virginia Maunder of Leominster, Massachusetts; daughter, Sharon Smith and her partner Greg Robinson of Lebanon, Connecticut; son, Earle H. Smith III and his wife Julie of Stratham, New Hampshire; and grandchildren, Paige Smith and Ian Smith.

A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor on Saturday, February 27 at 1 p.m. The Reverend Sarah Foulger will be officiating.
