A group of Edgecomb citizens have formed a committee to organize a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree contest, in conjunction with the annual Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens “Gardens Aglow” program and the Boothbay Festival of Lights. “Edgecomb individuals and groups are encouraged to decorate a Charlie Brown Christmas tree,” Committee chairperson Ted Hugger explained. “The trees will be on display in front of the Edgecomb Town Hall on Route 27 from Friday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec. 31. On Saturday, Jan. 6, we’re inviting the town to attend a celebratory bonfire for the entire community, where we’ll dispose of the trees and celebrate with refreshments.”

The tree judging will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8. Hot chocolate, treats, and music will showcase the award presentations. Decorated trees will be judged in a variety of fun categories, including “Sorriest Looking Tree,” “Most Unique Tree,” “Best Use of Aluminum Foil,” “Most Original,” and “Most Sincere Tree.” Winners will receive prizes, and all participating groups will receive certificates of participation.

Entries will be limited to 20 trees. The committee will provide each entrant with a scraggly tree, a tree stand, LED lights, and 110v power. The cost to enter a tree is $15; the entry fee will be waived for trees being decorated by Edgecomb Eddy School classes. The contest is open to any Edgecomb individual, group, organization, or business. The committee will be soliciting sponsorship donations from area businesses and individuals to underwrite the program.

Hugger explained that the committee was formed to find a way to engage Edgecomb residents, businesses and organizations in the holiday-themed events that take place on the Boothbay peninsula from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve. “The idea of a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree contest seemed perfect for our community,” he added. “And since Edgecomb is the gateway to the Boothbay peninsula, a display of festively lit Charlie Brown Christmas trees seems like a perfect welcome for visitors to the peninsula.”

Entry forms may be picked up at the Edgecomb Town Hall during normal business hours, or by emailing ted@codcoveinn.com
