Edgecomb schedules January special town meeting

Tue, 11/21/2017 - 11:45am

For Edgecomb residents, the new year will bring a special town meeting. Selectmen authorized a special town meeting Monday to seek voter approval for implementing two moratoriums and additional municipal funds. Selectmen set Tuesday, Jan. 16 as the special town meeting date to consider enacting separate 180-day moratoriums prohibiting floating structures and retail marijuana. The special town meeting will also request funds for compensating firefighters and a crew hired by Road Commissioner Scott Griffin to remove road debris caused by the Oct. 30 windstorm. Selectmen are also requesting funds for completing a survey of the Lallis property.

Municipal public safety officials reported Nov. 20 that the current windstorm damage cleanup cost is $37,960.06. Firefighters worked 408 hours during the cleanup and Griffin reported his department has expended $17,000 in cleanup costs. Once the cleanup is complete, Griffin estimated another $9,000 in associated costs.

Selectmen are requesting more money to complete a survey of the Lallis property on McKay Road. Selectmen previously contracted with Karl Olson & Associates for $1,500. Olson was charged with locating a suitable portion for subdividing on the property’s  northeastern corner. But the fee didn’t include funds for a soil and water test.

Selectmen have scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, Jan. 2. The special town meeting follows two weeks later in the municipal building. No time has been set for either.
