Fredda Mae Winnefeld

Fredda Mae Coupland Winnefeld died September 26 at her retirement home in Annapolis, Md. She had Alzheimer's disease.

She was born in St. Clair County, Ala. on October 20, 1929 and was raised in Alabama and Florida. She graduated from Stetson University and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha and Beta Beta Beta sororities. She was the 1951 Color Girl at the Naval Academy.

She married then Ensign James Alexander Winnefeld in 1952 and went on to raise a family and serve as a loyal Navy wife as her husband progressed through his naval career. She taught in private schools and was active in residential real estate in Virginia.

The Winnefelds returned to Annapolis in 1986 and for 20 years split their time between East Boothbay and her final home at Ginger Cove in Annapolis. She was a member of the Historic Annapolis Foundation, a Paca House Gardens docent, treasurer of the Naval Academy Color Girl Association, and a member of the Naval Academy Chapel Guild. 

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Rear Admiral James A. Winnefeld Jr., USN, ret.; two children, daughter Lea Sandman of Los Altos Hills, Calif., and son, Admiral James A. Winnefeld Jr. USN, of Arlington, Va.; and six grandchildren.
