Funkwagon is a gospel-infused funk band based in Burlington, Vermont, founded in 2005 by Aaron Burroughs.

Burroughs, originally from Michigan, grew up with music playing a large role in his life. There was always a piano in the Burroughs home, and he sang in many church choirs.

With bandmates Rob Jones, organ/vocals, Josh Carey, drums/vocals, Braden Winslow, guitar and Shakir Steven on bass the band has shared the stage with Mos Def, Parliament and Bernie Worrell.
Funkwagon is not a typical funk band, as the name might suggest.

“I like to think of it as church with a smoker's section ... and a bar,” Burroughs has said.

“Well for one thing its very vocal oriented; we pay attention to our lyrics,” Burroughs said. “It's popular, it's pop music in a way that it's hook oriented and bass driven but we have five and sometimes six part harmonies stacked on top of it all so it really does feel kind of like a choir, but it's kind of raw at the same time.”

The band has been capturing audiences and adding to its fan base throughout the northeast. That fan base is sure to include music lovers from Boothbay Harbor later this month.

Funkwagon plugs in at Mine Oyster, on Pier 1, in Boothbay Harbor, for two shows: Friday, Sept. 26 and Saturday, Sept. 27.
