Give a smile this holiday season

Mon, 11/24/2014 - 3:00pm

This year, how about giving a gift that changes the life of a Lincoln County resident: the gift of a healthy mouth, and a smile.

Some of our neighbors have difficulty eating, are suffering with infected or broken teeth, and long ago became too self conscious to smile. To date, there are more than 30 people waiting to be able to eat comfortably, smile, and feel confident whether having a conversation with friends and family, or applying for a job.

In one instance, a 61 year-old gentleman is suffering from coronary artery disease, diabetes and is on dialysis. He needs some financial help to get his dentures, so he can have dental clearance in order to receive a kidney transplant. This person will receive much more than a smile though this effort; he will have a healthier and better life.

That is just one story of many. Kathryn Young, licensed denturist, and her team have created a project to address the local need. The team presently volunteers on four denture cases each month, and all are willing to take the month of February to help all those people awaiting dentures on the Lincoln County Dental waiting list. Donations in any amount are needed.

In addition to some grant money, $400 buys the materials needed to create each denture, with the hours involved in making them, all volunteer. Many of us will spend that much and more to give gifts to our friends and family.

This year, why not “adopt” one of our neighbors in need, and give them a new year free of pain, and with the ability to eat and smile confidently?

Checks can be sent to Lincoln County Dental, 748 Maine Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Please note that the gift is for dentures. Any amount is welcome.

Lincoln County Dental is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit clinic run by dedicated volunteers focused on giving back to their community. They provide manageable care to Lincoln County residents at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Line.
