Woolwich Selectmen

Giving time of year for Woolwich

Fri, 12/19/2014 - 6:00am

While not many people would be glad to receive a pile of sand as a present under the Christmas tree, Woolwich residents are very happy for the gift of sand from Jack A. Shaw & Sons, according to selectmen.

The topic of seasonal giving was front and center at the Woolwich Board of Selectmen meeting Monday evening, Dec. 15.

Several years ago Jack A. Shaw & Sons started maintaining a pile of sand on its property at 275 Walker Road for use by town residents during the winter months.

Woolwich residents are welcome to stop by and fill a pail with the free sand to use in keeping the area around their home safe.

The Shaws replenish the sand during the winter and provide help to those who may need it by loading pails of sand into their cars.

In another holiday giving matter, Selectman Dale E. Chadbourne called the board’s attention to a family in Woolwich that was in need of some assistance from the community.

The family of six is wrestling with a family member’s medical problem and would appreciate any help that Woolwich residents would like to extend. Gas cards, gift certificates to the local supermarket, a cooked dinner or Christmas presents for the children would all be welcome.

Woolwich residents who would like to help are encouraged to contact Lynette R. Eastman, town administrator at 207-442-7094 or by email at administrator@woolwich.us.

Also in the spirit of gift giving, Debbie Locke announced that the Woolwich Historical Society has recently republished its 1982 cookbook, “Woolwich Cookery — Then and Now.”

Books will be available for $6 in the front room at the Town Office on Wednesday, Dec. 17 from 3 to 4:30. The cookbook is a delightful look back at recipes from the past, including two recipes for alewives and a recipe for Pork Cake that is over two hundred years old. Anyone who would like more information about the cookbook may call Debbie Locke at 207-443-5684.
