Fog and mist greeted arriving participants of the first Harbor Fest 5k race held September 29, but burned off in time for the 10 a.m. start. (More photos here.)

Kristy Anderson, who filled in for injured event organizer Sarah Blackman, said 143 participants competed on Sunday.

The group of active runners and walkers came to Boothbay from across Maine to raise money for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing. Runners raised a total of $1,700 for the center, which is based in Lewiston.

Mary Dempsey made a surprise appearance at the event. The actor’s sister said she had spoken to her brother the day before; and after telling him about the event, she said he was impressed at the community’s response. She thanked the organizers and the runners for their support, then event organizer Garry Blackman Jr. asked her to do the honors of starting the race.

“We had a great time putting the event together and thought we had an amazing turn out,” Anderson said in an email after the race.
