Anya Heyl said her half-mile-long dirt driveway in Edgecomb has its “pros and cons.”

Heyl won the 2014 Boothbay Register/Wiscasset Newspaper Best Fall Photo Contest with a photo of that driveway, framed by changing leaves.

The photo contest opened Sept. 21 and ended Nov. 2. Entrants were encouraged to submit their photos of what “fall means to them,” including anything from apple picking to Halloween costumes, from foliage to pumpkin carving.

Of the 60 entries, Heyl’s was voted the best.

“There is something sort of romantic about a little country lane  winding through the woods,” Heyl said in an email. “The road is most beautiful when the afternoon sun gets low, but especially in the fall when all the Maples are in their peak color.”

While Heyl took her photo close to home, the second place winner took her photo on her first ever fall visit to Boothbay.

Lynn Wilson lives in Arlington, Virginia, and seasonally in the Barters Island/Trevett area.

“The scenery is even more beautiful than in the summer months, with the fall color in the skies and the leaves,” Wilson said in an email. “I took the photo during the Worldwide Photo Walk on Oct. 11 2014, which I learned about by reading the Register!”

Wilson, along with other Photo Walk participants, walked around Boothbay Harbor for two hours as the sun set.

“To me, fall is all about color and the fading light,” Wilson said. “The shorter days make it even more tempting to go out and photograph the beauty of the area.”

Heyl and Wilson went for scenic photos of sky, leaves and trees, but Terri MacMahan of Georgetown snapped a shot of her son amongst pumpkins and hay bales.

“To me, fall in Maine is a sweet child picking out pumpkins,” said MacMahan, who came in third in the contest.

MacMahan said she was “thrilled to be chosen among so many great entries.”
