Irving C. Campbell

Irving C. Campbell, 82, of Boothbay Harbor died Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor surrounded by his family.

Irving was born on August 29, 1931 in Bath, the son of the late Captain Charles Campbell and Leila Davis Hutchins. He grew up on a dairy farm in Edgecomb, learning the value of hard work. As a young boy he enjoyed riding his horse. He attended schools in Arrowsic, Edgecomb and Wiscasset. He joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War from 1950-1954.

After the Navy, he worked as a sternman, logger, truck driver and as a police officer in Boothbay Harbor for two years. He also worked in construction with local contractors for 15 years. He was a crane operator at Bath Iron Works until he retired for the first time. After retirement, he started his own construction company until he officially retired.

He enjoyed life, especially building and riding his “trike” that he was seen riding all around the Boothbay region, in the Toys For Tots Run and the annual Stoney’s Lobster Run. One of his highlights was flying his airplane with his best friend, Billy Campbell.

He was a member and past commander of the Isaac M. Giles V.F.W. Post #3475 in Boothbay Harbor. He loved and lived to dance. He played guitar and harmonica. He was very creative when he was making beer or working on his cider press. He worked with the ambulance pit crew at the Wiscasset Speedway. He loved NASCAR and animals, and always had a German shepherd by his side.

He was predeceased by his father, Captain Charles Campbell; mother and stepfather, Leila Davis Hutchins and Thomas Hutchins; his first wife, Nancy Campbell; his second wife, Carol Campbell; and by a half brother, Donald Hutchins.

Irving is survived by two daughters, Vicki Arsenault and her husband Barry Arsenault of Wiscasset, and Debra Spear and her husband William of Boothbay; a son, Tom Campbell and his wife Belinda of Boothbay Harbor; stepchildren, Maurice Hyson of Edgecomb, Cindy Hyson Chance of Boothbay, Michelle Hyson Farnham of Boothbay; grandchildren, Jason, Tyler, Melanie, Aleigha and Desmond; and great grandchildren, Kyle, Samantha and Chanel.

A graveside service to celebrate Irving’s life will be held this spring on a date to be announced.
