Jane D. McClennan

Jane Dawes McClennan of Winchester, Mass. and Isle of Springs died March 8 at the age of 97.

She was predeceased by her parents, Chester and Anna Dawes, her brother, Laurens Dawes, and by her beloved husband of 47 years, John H. McClennan.

A native of Cambridge, Mass., Jane spent the last 62 years of her life in Winchester. She graduated from Abbott Academy in 1935 and from Wellesley College in 1939. After her graduation from Wellesley, she served as a teacher in New Bedford, Mass. She married John McClennan in 1944 after which she devoted her life to family and community.

Jane enjoyed volunteering for the Winchester Hospital and the Congregational Church and was active in a number of organizations including the College Club and League of Women Voters. Additionally she enjoyed bridge, reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing the piano, baking, traveling and most of all, spending summers on her beloved island in Maine with her family. Jane was a wonderful mother and grandmother and exemplified loyalty, patience, generosity, humor and grace. Jane is greatly missed by all who knew her.

She leaves her four children and their spouses: Joanne and Richard Phillips of Sudbury, Mass., Susan and Robert Reece of Topsfield, Mass., Elizabeth and Bradford Hastings of Boothbay, and Peter and Marta McClennan of Frankfurt, Germany. She also leaves eleven grandchildren: Amanda Phillips and her husband Dimitri Kastritsis of Charlottesville, Va. and  Cellandyke, Scotland, Stephen Phillips of Portland, Duncan Reece and his wife Valerie of Cambridge, Mass., Evan Reece and his wife Anne of San Francisco, Calif., Cameron Reece and his wife Ellen of Somerville, Mass., Hugh Reece and his wife Erica Tubman, of Cambridge, Mass., B. Tucker Hastings and his wife Kate of Greenwich, Conn., Anna Hastings and her fiancé Jean-Rémy Bonnefoy of Middletown and Newark, Del., William C. Hastings and his fiancée Emily Muchmore of Brookline, Mass., George McClennan of Berlin, Germany and Milena McClennan of Frankfurt, Germany. Jane also leaves nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Jane will be held Saturday afternoon, March 14 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Winchester, 21 Church St., Winchester, Mass.
