Jane E. Meister

Jane Elizabeth (Winters) Meister died peacefully on May 10, 2015 at the Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.

Jane was born to Matthew and Ninetta (Illingworth) Winters on March 21, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois. She attended local schools and graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree.

Jane met her future husband, Jack Meister, at Indiana University. They were married Sept. 4, 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana. During World War II, Jane worked as a cartographer (map maker). When the war ended, she stayed home and raised four children. When her kids were old enough, Jane went back to school and received her teaching certificate and began a career teaching kindergarten through fourth grade, first in Camden, New Jersey, then in the Baltimore school district in Maryland and finally in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Jane was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking. She was a member of the Junior League and Eastern Star, and worked as a docent at the James Buchanan House in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Jane attended the North Bay Community Church in Clearwater, Florida, and the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

In 1987 she and her husband moved to Florida where she worked at her son’s deli. Jane moved to California in 2000 and then later to Maine in 2002 to be closer to her daughters.

Jane was predeceased by her husband, Jack Meister, her sister, Barbara Burridge, and her brother, Matthew Winters Jr.

She is survived by daughter, Barbara Wyman of Newcastle; daughter, Susan Bolt of Bethel Island, California; son, John Meister of Oldsmar, Florida; son, Kurt Meister of New York, New York; granddaughter, Hannah Barth of Santa Monica, California; grandson, Matthew Bolt of Bethel Island, California; granddaughter, April Wolfe of Clearwater, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

A private family celebration of Jane’s life will be held in September..
