He grew up in Wiscasset, the son of Jed Ellis and Evelyn “Betsy” (Hinkley) Colby. He graduated from Wiscasset High School in the class of 1965 and entered the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Pictor during the Vietnam War.

When he returned home he married Carol Chaney of Edgecomb. He went to work for Stone & Webster at Maine Yankee. He was also employed by the Wiscasset Police Department and part-time at Lincoln County Sheriff Department in the 1970s. In 1972 he started with Central Maine Power Company at the Mason Station in Wiscasset. While working for CMP he attended New Hampshire College on the Navy base in Brunswick, graduating in 1983.

He earned his Maine Guide license, always wanting a fly line in his hand. Jed retired from CMP in 2001 and went back to work the next day for Florida Light and Power in the same location. When FPL sold their building to National Reservoir out of Greenwich, Connecticut, he was retired again for 18 months. He then went back to work for the new owner of the Mason Station until December of 2015.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, motorcycles, woodworking and spending time up north.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Colby of Edgecomb; daughter, Stacy Colby Barnes and granddaughter Olivia from Dresden; son, Jed Eben Colby and his wife Toryann of Edgecomb; sisters, Dawn Cates of Vassalboro and Susan James of Standish; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by both of his parents, as well as his son-in-law, John D. Barnes, on March 9, 2014.
