Laurie J. Morey

Laurie Jeanette Morey, 79, of Rockland, died Feb. 20, 2015 at her home with her son and caregiver, Mark, by her side.

Born Oct. 17, 1935, in East Boothbay, she was one of 10 children born to Frederic Carlos McKown Sr. and Hazel Farnham McKown. She was a 1954 graduate of Boothbay Region High School. Shortly after graduating high school, she married Leroy Montgomery Morey and moved to Rockland. They were married 55 years at the time of Leroy’s death.

Laurie worked in many local businesses as a bookkeeper and secretary. She was an avid seamstress and quilter; she leaves behind a legacy of her creations. For many years she resided in Cushing, where she was a long-time, active member of The Broad Cove Church.

She has left her family with a lifetime of memories and will be greatly missed by her children and family. She provided a happy childhood for her children. Laurie and Leroy enjoyed many things together including scuba diving, motorcycling, traveling, roller skating, boating and hosting many family events. She was kind, giving and helpful to her friends.

Besides her parents and husband, Laurie was predeceased by her in-laws, Montgomery and Joyce Blood Morey; brothers, Frederic C. McKown Jr., Robert A. McKown and David McKown; and a sister, Marilyn Collins.

She leaves behind a daughter, Susan Martin of Cushing; a son, Mark Morey of Rockland; a brother, George (Bink) McKown and his wife Susan of Thomaston; four sisters, Barbara Dewey of California, Martha McKown of East Boothbay, Joyce Graffam of Thomaston and Marjorie Yocum and her husband William of Lady Lake, Florida; a grandson, Jesse Eaton and his wife Erica of Richmond, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Linda Benway of Westbrook; as well as many nieces and nephews.

There will be no service; burial will take place in the spring at Pleasant View Cemetery, Cushing.
