Linwood W. Dutton, 80, died Friday, July 6, 2012 with his family at his side at Maine General Medical Center, Augusta Campus, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

He was born in Augusta on September 24, 1931, a son of the late Theo W. and Grace R. (Townsend) Dutton.

Mr. Dutton was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1949 and Boston University, class of 1955 where he earned his bachelor’s degree.

Following college, he served in the U.S. Army until 1957.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Augusta.

Mr. Dutton had been employed by the state of Maine for 31 years, retiring from the Department of Labor.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason at the Bethlehem Lodge where he was a member for over 40 years.

He was active in many youth programs throughout his life including Capital City Gun Club, Augusta Youth Orchestra and Babe Ruth League.

He was a devoted family man that dedicated all of his life to his wife and family. He was always involved in the activities of his children, and grandchildren rarely missing a school event, cheering competition, concert or ballgame. He enjoyed camping, family travel, boating, fishing, and spending time with family at the log cabin that he built with his father on Cobbossee Lake in 1952. In spite of family objections he remained an avid New York Yankees fan. He was known by all that knew him as a very loving and caring man with a quick wit and dry sense of humor.

Mr. Dutton was pre-deceased by a son, Scott A. Dutton and a sister, Ruth Frazee.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Anita L. (Luttrell) Dutton of Augusta; two sons: Steven Dutton and his wife Debra Wyman of East Boothbay and Jason Dutton and his wife Denise of Chelsea; a daughter, Jody Soule and her husband David of Clinton; daughter-in-law, Sybil Dutton of Great Falls, Mont.; nine grandchildren: Scott Dutton, Jr., Heather Dutton, Kayla Pulst, Sean Dutton, Kimberly Dutton, Jamie Soule, Bradley Soule, Katelyn Dutton and Emily Dutton; seven great-grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12 at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial and committal prayers will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Winthrop St., Augusta.
