Mary Coombs, 91, of Boothbay Harbor died peacefully at St. Andrews Village on July 2, 2014.

Born to Leslie and Elizabeth (Brown) Blake, Mary lived most of her early years in Boothbay Harbor, graduating from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1940. She went on to attend Chandler Secretarial School in Boston, Mass. and after a brief secretarial career spent one year in nursing school at Newton Wellesley Hospital.

In 1946, she married her high school sweetheart Joe Coombs, and together they raised four children in Portland, where Joe worked as a civil engineer for the Maine Central Railroad. When her children were older, Mary worked as an administrative assistant at the University of Southern Maine.

After retirement in 1983, Mary and Joe returned to Boothbay Harbor where they spent many happy years getting reacquainted with old friends and making new ones. Mary could often be found sailing on their boat Abishag or tending her flower garden. Always ready to volunteer, she was active in the Garden Club, Methodist Church, and St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary. She was an ardent bridge player and regularly joined her friends for a game.

Family and friends were very important to Mary, and she enjoyed spending time with them. In her later years she acquired a wonderful extended family at St. Andrews Village. All will miss her cheery smile, kind words and lively conversation.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, and survived by her four children and their families; Beth Coombs and her husband Dave Langlois of Oxford, Connie Coombs and her husband Lou Cappiello of Hampden, Jim Coombs and his wife Patty of Portland, Catherine (Coombs) Scanlon and her husband Jim of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Tricia Cleary, Jonathan Pruett, Greg and Mike Scanlon; three great-grandchildren, Erin Cleary and Jonny Pruett, and Dustin Edwards; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews Village on Saturday, July 12 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Ami Sawtelle officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the United Methodist Church of Boothbay Harbor.
