Mary Stevens Grant

Mary Stevens Grant, 88, of Bourne, Mass. died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of Burton A. Grant to whom she was married to for 71 years.

Born in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of the late Bert and Florence (Bourget) Davis.

During World War II, Mary worked as a pipe coverer at Bath Iron Works while her husband was away fighting in the war. Mary was a proprietor of two “mom and pop” convenience stores, The Village Cash & Carry in Boothbay Harbor and Mary’s Pop-In in Edgecomb, and she ran the Winthrop Motel in Winthrop, Maine, all with husband Burton.

Mary enjoyed cooking, baking and traveling to see family. She took great pleasure in the friendships she made with those who frequented the stores. It was a gathering place for socializing, bantering and catching up with friends.  

Besides her husband, Mary is survived by her daughter, Deborah of Marston’s Mills, Mass.; granddaughter, Kathleen and her husband Chris of Bourne, Mass.; grandson, Daniel and his wife Ali of Middleboro, Mass., grandson, Joseph and his wife Jennifer of Clifton, Va.; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Tanner and Sadie Ava and her sister, Shirley Hirsch of Lunenberg, Mass. She was the sister of the late Leighton Davis, Sylvia Crocker, Emmie Alley, Thelma Nelson and Geraldine Davis.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 23, at 12:30 p.m. in the Waquoit Congregational Church, 15 Parsons Lane, East Falmouth, Mass. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass. at 2:15 p.m.
