Melba R. Cunningham

Melba R. Cunningham, 92, died March 14 at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor.

She was born October 16, 1920 in East Boothbay to Melvin and Sara Whitehouse Hodgdon. She grew up on Barlow’s Hill in East Boothbay and attended local schools.

Melba worked at St. Andrews Hospital as a certified nurses aid for 31 years retiring in 1981. She began working in the old wooden hospital in 1958. She was honored for her many years of service by the staff and was given an anniversary clock.

Melba was a jack of all trades and even drove an old dump truck. Her dad would load up two trucks with gravel, sand or whatever and off they would go in the evenings. She built the first kitchen cabinets in her house. She did not sew, however. Melba was a past worthy matron of the Eastern Star, Crescent Chapter 54, of East Boothbay, as well as a lifetime member having served several offices in the lodge.

She was predeceased by her husband, Elbridge Cunningham, and by a son, William Cunningham.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy DeCosta of Boothbay; son, Allen Cunningham of Berwick; grandchildren, Rodney DeCosta of Boothbay Harbor, Randy DeCosta of Alna, Michael Cunningham of Alabama, Christopher Cunningham of Bath, David Cunningham of Bath, Regina Deuns of Dover, N.H., David Cunningham of Bath and Lynn Walkins of Florida; and 16 great grandchildren.

A graveside service to celebrate Melba’s life will be held Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, Barters Island Road, Boothbay with Al Roberts officiating.
