Model airplane group back for Wings Over Wiscasset

The first model airplane Sandy Schmidt built in his youth flew about 25 feet.

“I thought that was the greatest thing in the world,” the Brunswick man said.

Schmidt, 70, is secretary-treasurer of Brunswick Area Modelers. The group of enthusiasts, ranging in age from about 10 to octogenarians, will return to the Wiscasset Municipal Airport for Wings Over Wiscasset on August 8 and 9. The group also took part in the first Wings in 2013. The community’s all-out effort on the event impressed members, Schmidt said.

Members take part in area airports’ fly-ins and other events, to help promote the group and to help spark interest in the hobby for children and anyone else.

Activities the modelers are offering at Wings this year include making foam-plate gliders, with a penny used as the counterweight, Schmidt said. Model planes will also be on static display; and event-goers will be able to try out a model airplane flight simulator. Users will hold a two-handled box, like that used for a radio-controlled model plane. A wire attaches the box to a computer. Those who try it will be able to see how the plane fares, and if it crashes, the simulator may tell how much the damage would have cost had a model plane actually crashed, Schmidt said.

There was a big line to use the simulator at Wings last year, he said. “That’s very popular.”

Brunswick Area Modelers has members in Woolwich, Bristol, Bath, Brunswick, elsewhere in Maine, and as far as Connecticut and Virginia. Among its members are volunteer flight instructors, Schmidt said.

Admission to Wings is free and so are the modelers’ activities. Event-goers may also buy tickets on a raffle. The prize winner will get to try operating a control-line plane under members’ guidance. The wire on a control-line plane attaches to a handle used to direct the plane’s movements, as the user stands in the center of a circle. The trial will happen right after the 1 p.m. Saturday, August 9 drawing, so the winner must be present or another ticket will be drawn, Schmidt said.

The club is donating the raffle’s proceeds to Wings Over Wiscasset.

The group will be doing control-line plane demonstrations during both days of Wings, Schmidt said.
