Muriel L. Giles

Muriel Low Giles, 89, of Boothbay Harbor, died peacefully at the Hospice House in Auburn on July 6, 2012.

Muriel was born on Sept. 1, 1922, in Boothbay Harbor, the youngest of four children. Muriel attended elementary school in Belfast and graduated from high school in Boothbay Harbor in 1940. She married Leland Giles and had a stepson, Craig, and a son, Brent.

Muriel worked for Key Bank in Boothbay Harbor for 12 years; retiring in 1984. After retirement, she worked for several local businesses, including an art supply store and gift shops.

Muriel spent a great deal of time researching her family genealogy and traveled to many of the archives, libraries, cemeteries and museums in Maine and Massachusetts. She served as treasurer of the Pemaquid Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution for many years and was a member of the Mayflower Society, the National Society Daughters of Colonial Wars, Inc., the National Society of the United States Daughters of Eighteen Hundred and Twelve, and the National Society of Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. Muriel also enjoyed painting, crocheting, knitting, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Cecil Low and Wilma Huntington Knight; her husband, Leland Giles; a sister, Agnes Low Dunton of Wiscasset; and brothers Robert Low of Colorado and George Low of Florida.

She is survived by her son, Brent Giles and his wife Donna; her stepson, Craig Giles and his wife Sarah, all of Boothbay Harbor. She is also survived by six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A private interment will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
