Norman L. Sawyer

Norman L. Sawyer, 89, of Hooper Street, Wiscasset died June 23, 2014 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

He was born in Mechanic Falls on August 6, 1924, a son of Edward F. and Violet (Prince) Sawyer.

He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army, serving during World War II with the Army Engineers Amphibious Regiment in the South Pacific. On July 6, 1951 he married Betty Jean Allen. They moved to Wiscasset in 1972 where he started his plumbing and heating business, retiring at the age of 65.

He was a life member of the Masons in Mechanic Falls, and a longtime member of the Down East Yacht Club.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, skiing and golf.

He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Sawyer of Wiscasset; one son, David Sawyer and his wife Sheila of Wiscasset; one daughter, Crystal Almasi and her husband Stephen of Wiscasset; one brother, Malcolm P. Sawyer of Mechanic Falls; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

An open house celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 5 at his home at 20 Hooper Street. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanic Falls at a later date.
