Dresden Selectmen

Planning begins to revive Dresden’s old town hall

Dresden resident Walter Loeman submitted a written proposal to selectmen regarding his interest in revitalizing the old town hall, also known as the grange hall. Currently, the only use the building has is a place to meet for the snowmobiling club.

His interest in this was previously discussed at the Jan. 24 meeting.

The selectmen decided to put together a meeting with Loeman, John Ottum, president of the Historical Society, and Rick Graffam of the snowmobiling club, to go over the different ideas for revitalization, and to ensure that any improvements wouldn’t damage the building’s historical value.

Graffam also expressed a desire to access the building to check on the sump pump, and requested Dan Stewart be allowed access for electrical services.

“The outside light can only be turned on upstairs,” Graffam said. “And as we were told not to go upstairs, that is a problem.” Stewart has offered to, at his own expense, rewire the light to a switch on the ground floor. There was some confusion among selectmen as to why the club was told not to go upstairs, though it was determined it was likely a fire safety issue as the secondary exit from upstairs is not very secure, according to Administrative Assistant Michael Henderson.

In other business, the team of researchers from Boston College finished installing the temporary seismic station in the basement of the town office Jan. 24.

The selectmen adopted the final draft of the severe weather policy regarding town closures during inclement weather; and discussed bids received for a new generator for the public safety building and town office, as the current one is 20 years old and insufficient for powering both buildings. They are seeking more information and did not accept any bids.

The board appointed Branden Parker to the Budget Review Committee, Ottum to the Cable Expansion Committee, and Louise Gephart to the Marijuana Business Committee.

Selectman Allan Moeller Sr. reported the sand shed is down to 500 or 600 yards and he requested permission to use highway fund money to purchase more from Crooker Construction at $10.50 per yard. The board approved the purchase of 500 more yards of sand.

Debbie Gagnon donated an animal oxygen mask to the Dresden Fire Department.

Selectmen meet every other Monday at Pownalborough Hall. The board meets next on March 5.
