The places Pokemon Go is going in Wiscasset garnered mixed reactions from Waterfront Committee members Aug. 25. Harbor Master Preston Dunning filled them in on locations that have emerged as gyms and other sites in the virtual reality game people are playing on their phones.

Committee member and Sprague’s Lobster owner Frank Sprague believed that was the likely explanation for a surprising sighting he recently had of someone holding their phone and focusing on it instead of where they were walking — right into a railing at the Main Street Pier, face first.

The person fell down and got up, Sprague said. He said he told him, “I hope you’re alright and that you’re phone’s alright,” at which point the person, phone in hand, became concerned, looked at it, then was relieved to see it was okay, Sprague said.

Since the game is played on the phone, maybe players could be sent job applications so they could go to work, member David Gagnon said. “Get a job. Get a life.”

One of the game sites is near Sprague’s business, although the game calls it Frank’s Lobster, Dunning said. Sprague wondered how his spot on the pier could become part of the game without his knowing about it. Dunning explained that people can go online and propose sites to add.

According to Dunning, local sites include the town landing, the community playground on Gardiner Road; and Red’s Eats and Castle Tucker, where he said there are gyms, another component of the game. Dunning said people are also playing the game near the Taste of Maine restaurant in Woolwich.

Chairman Susan Robson and Town Planner Ben Averill saw a bright side to Wiscasset’s inclusion in the game. It’s bringing people to town, they said.

“At least they’re coming,” Robson said. The game is getting them to go where they might not otherwise have gone, she said. “That’s pretty neat.”
