Wiscasset voting will take place in the gymnasium of the Community Center at the Tuesday, Nov. 8 general election. Voting is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

New voters can register at the town office or at the polls with proper ID and proof of residency.

Town Clerk Linda Perry said moving the polls from the area where the senior citizens meet to the gym was needed to accommodate what’s expected to be a large turnout. Along with voting for a new president, there are six state referendum questions to be considered.

Voters will also decide whether to allow firefighters to wash their personal vehicles at the firehouse. The question was inserted by petition. The votes on that question won’t have to be hand-counted as originally reported. The tally will take place the same time as the general election, added Perry. “The printers were able to supply us with machine ballots prior to the 30-day absentee deadline,” she told the newspaper Monday.

Perry noted in her monthly report to selectmen, the change to a larger venue will allow for poll watchers and petitioners to be within view of the election warden and moderator. “This change makes it possible for the polling area to have a separate entrance and exit which is recommended by the Secretary of State; allowing Election Day to go smoother,” she said.

To date the town office hasn’t received any requests for anyone to poll-watch but will have spaces available if they should show up on Election Day.

Perry noted the town office has been receiving absentee ballot requests on a daily basis and the numbers are increasing. The last day to request an absentee ballot is Thursday, Nov. 3. As of Monday the town office had received over 325 requests.

Absentee voting will be conducted at Wiscasset Green, 21 Washington Street for residents wanting to absentee vote, continued Perry. The state requires communities to conduct absentee voting at certain assisted living and nursing home facilities, she added.

“I will be going to Wiscasset Green within the next week. I have already spoken to them and will be calling to set up an exact time,” she stated in response to an email from the newspaper.

Perry noted a training session for ballot clerks was scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 18. She said she has 10 to 12 election clerks to cover the election. “I also scheduled backup clerks just in case I need them,” she said.

According to Perry, Wiscasset currently has 2,720 registered voters. She noted 2,076 Wiscasset voters turned out for the 2012 presidential election.
