The Wiscasset Historic Preservation Commission met Feb. 16 to review other towns’ historic preservation ordinances with an eye toward changing Wiscasset’s.

Voters approved the ordinance in June 2015.

Among the towns’ ordinances the commission reviewed was Brunswick’s, which commissioners said was well-organized. They matched sections of the Wiscasset ordinance to Brunswick’s sections and discussed possibly proposing Wiscasset adopt some of Brunswick’s.

Commissioners also discussed the possibility of doing an in-depth survey of the historic district, with an eye toward becoming a Certified Local Government, a designation of the National Park Service, and state historic preservation commissions. That project would require funding. Town Planner Ben Averill said he is not sure if Maine’s commission is providing funding at this time.

Commissioners agreed to consider a certificate of appropriateness for a fence at 4 Fort Hill Road on March 16. The next regular meeting is March 2 at 5 p.m in the municipal building.
