Railway Village goes to the dogs

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 5:00pm

On Saturday, June 6 the Boothbay Railway Village will host the second annual Rescue Day at the Railway. The day will be filled with activities designed specifically for dogs and their families.

The five Maine dog rescues and animal shelters participating in this year’s event are Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Underhound Railroad, Almost Home Rescue of New England, Catahoula Rescue of New England and New England Border Collie Rescue. Dogs and puppies currently looking for their forever homes will be available to meet with potential families throughout the day. The rescues are also hosting fundraisers in their booths including raffles, silent auctions and bake sales.

A shopping mall featuring Maine-made pet accessories, treats and apparel is also planned. Vendors include The Animal House, Cunnah Town Blues, and Two Salty Dogs Pet Outfitters.

Throughout the day Maine authors who support animal rescue will be featured inside Spruce Point Chapel for readings from their recent titles. Participating authors include David Rosenfelt, author of “Dogtripping” and the Andy Carpenter Mysteries; Don Carrigan, reading from “Togus”; Paige Pendleton and her book, “Star of Wonder” about Aldemere Farm’s belted Galaway cows; and Stephen Powell reading from his novel “Centered.” Illustrator Thomas Block, who has worked with Carrigan, Pendleton and Powell will also attend. Books will be for sale.

Other fun things to do include a RallyFree and freestyle demonstrations by Dancing Paws. The Coastal Dog is constructing a doggie day care sampler complete with pool and fencing for off-leash fun. A late addition is the opportunity to meet the publishers of a newly launched Maine dog magazine called Fido.

Rescue Day at the Railway is made possible through the support of The Animal House, provisioner of healthy pet supplies in Damariscotta and Westbrook, and The Coastal Dog, an open-concept doggy daycare and boarding service in Edgecomb.

Museum will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the museum and the event is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Museum members are free. For more information about Rescue Day, find Boothbay Railway Village on Facebook or visit the museum’s website at www.railwayvillage.org.
