Rev. Rice returns to Southport Island

Rev. Dr. Charles Rice will be preacher and celebrant on September 2 and 9 at the Chapel of All Saints-by-the Sea on Southport Island. Services are held at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. both Sundays, concluding summer services for the year. A coffee hour will be held with Dr. Rice on the church deck following the 10 a.m. services.

Dr. Rice is a professor emeritus at Drew University, in N.J., where he taught at the Theological School and the Graduate School. He is a graduate of Baylor University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Union Theological Seminary, and Duke University and is a trustee at the Kirkridge Retreat Center, in Bangor, Pa., where he teaches. He is presently priest-in-charge at St. Mark’s Episcopal church in Mendham, N.J.

He has written in the fields of preaching, liturgics, and religion and literature. A recent publication is “New Proclamation: Preaching in Holy Week,” by Fortress Press. 

In addition to conducting Sunday services, Dr. Rice will moderate Wednesday morning discussions at 9 a.m. on the chapel porch. The topic at both discussions will be “The Middle Way Today.”

Boat service to the chapel is available on the Novelty, leaving Boothbay Harbor at 9 a.m. from pier 8 and returning after the service at 11:40 a.m. Private boats may land at the church dock. Parking is available along Route 238 at the head of All Saints Lane.

Summer services will resume in mid-June. The traditional Christmas Eve service will be held in the chapel, weather permitting.
