Revolutionary War Living History Encampment in Dresden Aug. 12-13

Wed, 08/02/2017 - 9:30am

Loyalists have recently been spotted in the woods near the 1761 Pownalborough Court House in Dresden. In response, authorities have called upon Captain Daniel Savage's Company from Old Fort Western and Captain Fletcher's Company from the St. George area to encamp at the Pownalborough Court House over the weekend of Aug. 12-13. They will lead the public in several “scouts” into the woods in search of these supporters of the King. Your help is requested.

Grounds are open to the public 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Re-enactors will demonstrate and interpret military history as well as the mission, equipment, skills and experiences of the local militia. Soldiers and camp followers will practice military drill, fire muskets, cook, play at lawn bowling, and otherwise entertain. Dr. Cony, a physician from the period, will bring medical tools that might have been used to amputate damaged limbs or attend to injuries.

Short scouts will be conducted regularly throughout the day on Saturday. Youngsters will be issued wooden muskets and, after a brief training, will accompany the soldiers as they search for the Loyalists. Sunday morning there will be a longer two-hour scout up the trails from 9 to 11 a.m.
