In advance of their upcoming tour with Tommy Emmanuel and David Grisman, the award-winning country-bluegrass crossover duo, Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley are traveling to Maine to perform at the historic Opera House in Boothbay Harbor on Thursday, Sept, 14. An evening with Ickes and Hensley features contemporary bluegrass paired with the spare country stylings of classic 60’s and 70’s country music.

From his powerful yet sympathetic vocal interpretations of traditional and contemporary material to his jaw-dropping instrumental skills on both acoustic and electric guitar and considerable songwriting talents, Trey Hensley is bursting at the seams with freshness and musical excitement. His resonant baritone voice is rich, expressive, and equally at ease with classic bluegrass, traditional country, and original compositions. Raised in Jonesborough, Tennessee, Trey began playing guitar and singing when he was 10 years old. Invited by Marty Stuart and joined from the wings by Earl Scruggs, Trey Hensley landed on the Grand Old Opry when he was only 11. Trey has played with Johnny and June Carter Cash, Charlie Daniels, Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner, The Oak Ridge Boys and Janie Fricke among others.

Country star Marty Stuart recently said this about Trey, “I first met Trey at a concert in East Tennessee when his guitar was almost bigger than he was. He played me his version of “Jimmy Brown the Newsboy” by the Carter Family that night and I instantly became his fan. As a musician, singer and songwriter, I’ve watched him evolve since that first meeting, but the one thing that has never changed is Trey’s authenticity. In the ever changing world of country music, it’s comforting to know that the real deal still exists. I’m counting on Trey to keep the voice of the mountains alive because mountain boys always have something to say that’s worthy of a listen.”

Rob Ickes played bluegrass with his much-decorated band Blue Highway for over 20 years, during which time he was adjudged Bluegrass Dobro Player Of the year 15 times. Rob has played on countless sessions, recording with artists including Merle Haggard, Dierks Bentley, Patty Loveless, and Alison Krauss. His most recent album Three Bells is a true dobro summit, collaborating with fellow greats Jerry Douglas and the late Mike Auldridge. As an active session player and touring musician, he has collaborated with a wide range of musicians including Charlie Haden, Merle Haggard, Earl Scruggs, Tony Rice, Alison Krauss, Willie Nelson, David Lee Roth, Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless, Peter Rowan, Claire Lynch, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Tickets for the concert are available through the Opera House box office at 86 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor or by calling 633-5159. The box office is open Tuesday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets and information are also available online at boothbayoperahouse.com.
