Shakespeare Festival presents 'Twelfth Night'

Last two performances August 7 and 10
Mon, 08/05/2013 - 10:30am

When I was in New York City in the late 1970s, I happened upon a performance of Shakespeare's “Much Ado About Nothing” in Washington Square Park.

There was, and is, something so very magical about theater performed outdoors. And when you blend such a natural venue with Shakespeare it becomes quite a heady experience.

This year in Bath (not England), a nonprofit, professional theater group, the Bath Shakespeare Festival, was formed. The group performs Shakespeare outdoors in Bath's Library Park.

The company is led by director Stephen Legawiec. He is the author of 30 plays. He has directed other Shakespearean works including “Hamlet” and “As You Like It.”

Legawiec said he formed the group because the Midcoast lacked such a Shakespearean company.

“We have had people tell us that they were glad to see us start up and hope we will be around for a long time. The idea of doing Shakespeare in the park is not unique and has a long tradition, not only in America, but abroad,” Legawiec said. “As Shakespeare's plays are written to be performed without scenery, an open space like a park is ideal.”

Legawiec chose Shakespeare's “Twelfth Night,” also known as “What You Will” as the company’s first play.

“Twelfth Night” is a comedy of love, confusion, hidden identity (which leads to mistaken identity) and jealousy — with a dash of cross-dressing to spice things up. The show is two hours with a 10 minute intermission. Due to its length, this performance is not recommended for very young children.

Six performances were scheduled and began in late July. Due to the enthusiastic reception by the public, two additional dates have been added: Wednesday, August 7 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, August 10 at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $5 for children under 12. No credit card payment accepted; cash or check only. The show is not recommended for very young children due to its length. To make reservations, call 207-854-8882 or visit the company's website, http://bathshakespeare.org.

Library Park is on Washington Street in close proximity to the Patten Free Library. Folding chairs are provided but audience members may bring chairs and/or blankets.

In case of rain, the production moves to Bath Dance Works located at 72 Front Street in Bath.
